WHAT OUR BOOK CLUBS ARE READING NOW

Madrid English book club

Organiser: David Robinson

The Madrid English Book Club is an open and welcoming environment for book lovers living in Madrid. We have been a gateway to many newcomers in the city to meet friends with a mutual love for reading and meeting new people.

Come if you’ve read the book, come if you’ve only read half, come if you’ve only watched the film or just come for the glass of wine and the good chat.

The conversation can be as intellectual or as light-hearted as you want it to be, and we promote a wide range of books from authors of different backgrounds. We read a different book each month, be that fiction or non-fiction, and we urge everyone who attends the meetings to give their suggestions for future discussions.

Along with our official monthly book, we do urge people enthusiastic about another book to organise their own meetings if people are as interested as they are.

Next Meetings:

12 May: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

7 July: A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

GIEDRE'S BOOK CLUB

Organiser: Giedre Pavalkyte

Our group is open to all kinds of literature and to everybody who is ready to read and discuss books in English.

We select books two months in advance in order to give our members enough time to read them. Those who attend our meetings have a chance to propose a book they would like us to discuss in two months, and after we collect all the proposals we all vote and select what we are going to read.

You can join the club through the link below and subscribe to our news and/or sign up for the next book discussions.

Next Meetings:

22 June: The Future of Humanity by Michio Kaku

6 July: The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

MADRID GIRL GONE INTERNATIONAL

Organiser: Ruth Mary Heyns

This women’s only bookclub has been running for the last 5 years and has a very active and engaged group of readers. We normally hold two meetings a month: a fiction meeting and an “alternative” meeting (non-fiction/poetry/podcast and article) and in December we have a mystery book swap party.

We normally meet at Santa Eulalia Boulangerie Patisserie (Calle Espejo 12, 28013) near Opera metro and in the summer we prefer to have a picnic in the Retiro Park.

It’s definitely recommended that you read the book before you come (even if you haven’t managed to finish it) because we always have a lively discussion and share our opinions about it. One of the best things about this bookclub is that you get to find out and engage with new authors and books you might never have read otherwise.

Next Meetings:

19 May: The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niggenegger

26 May: Normal People by Sally Rooney

2 June: Becoming by Michelle Obama

BOOKCLE BOOK CLUB

Organiser: Danielle Lyon

Bored of English classes? Bookcle is a book club for those who want to keep practicing their English without having to attend classes. We usually meet at La Ciudad Invisible but this might change as our numbers grow.

We will read, meet every month and discuss the themes, characters and vocabulary in the book and there will be a native English teacher there to correct your mistakes and help you understand anything you have problems with. There will hopefully soon be a website up and running to provide you with some extra materials.

It’s a great way to meet new people who you have things in common with over a coffee. We are a friendly bunch! We love to get suggestions for new books to try out and try to cover various genres and writers – feel free to propose a title. We usually collect suggestions and have a vote on the Facebook page to decide the book to read.

Feel free to come along even if you’ve only partly read the book or even just watched the film. The idea is to have a fun inclusive environment where everyone can participate regardless of their level.

NOT YOUR MOTHER'S BOOK CLUB

Organisers: Hayley Mound and Dee Garcia

The book club was originally founded by a young woman named Alex, now running her own chapter in Mexico.

We are an all ladies book club that meets once a month. We are a small club and we like our club to remain on the smaller side as we feel it allows for deeper conversation with everyone having a chance to voice their opinions.

We normally meet in a charming cafe tucked away in Madrid’s La Latina neighbourhood.

The Book Club is not currently taking new members, but you can request to join the waiting list.

Next Meetings:

31 May: Vox by Christina Dalcher

27 June: Tangerine by Christine Mangan

COSTA DEL BOOK CLUB

Organiser: Lisa Abrahamson

The Costa del Book Club is based on the Costa del Sol and meets every 4-6 weeks, with each meeting hosted by a different member. We are mostly North Americans, Northern Europeans and Spanish members. Currently we are all women but we welcome men as well! We’re all fairly well travelled, many of us have our kids at the same school and we all love to read!

For some of us, the only time we meet is when we have book club as outside of our club, we all have active and independent lives. Our kids vary in ages from primary school to out of college- but none of this really matters as we just enjoy discussing our books and adding our unique insight with each gathering.

The Book Club is not open to new members at the current time.
